It will be more expensive! Private school fees are expected to rise 9% in 2024

For next year, it is expected that tuition fees for private schools undergo an adjustment of, on average, 9%. The estimate was made by the website Melhor Escola, which maps the country's schools.

The survey received responses from 979 educational institutions across Brazil, except the states of Roraima and Tocantins.

Among the various responses, there are those that will not adjustments and those that will increase the value by 35% of the current value. This is because, according to Law 9,870/1999, there is no limit to the readjustment of private institutions.

Understand the increase in value

According to Melhor Escola's founding partner, Sergio Andrade, the adjustment, above inflation, is considered natural. The school will take into account, yes, the inflationary adjustment, but it will add up the investments that took place during the year.

But Andrade also emphasizes that this is a reflection of the pandemic period, which generated greater variation of spending and investments, unlike a more stable moment, both economically and globally.

Currently, the education market estimates prices based on inflation rates, such as the Consumer Price Index (IPCA), and the General Price Index — Market (IGP-A).

In addition to all the teacher adjustments, agreements with unions and other investments made by the institution. This establishes the value of the annuity, which will remain the same throughout the year.

Educational institution must explain the increase

However, even though each school has its own percentage increase, the institution must justify the increases for families, in addition to delivering payment conditions and whether there is flexibility in the contract.

However, the Brazilian Consumer Protection Institute (Idec) makes it clear that it is possible to contest the changes. Especially if the college adjustment is considered abusive.

The increase must have a justification, and it must not be aimed at profit. According to Igor Brito, director of Institutional Relations at Idec: “It is necessary to show that there was an increase proportional to the expense”.

If there is no way to reach an agreement, Procon can (and should) be called. However, the body already routinely notifies schools to present their cost sheets.
