A dollar “of millions”, literally

It was designed for an extraordinary price of US$480,000, equivalent to approximately R$2.4 million, setting a new sales record for a collector's piece of this type.

The feat of this US$10,000 bill, issued in 1934, is even more remarkable when we know its historical value from previous auctions.

A spokesperson for the auction house revealed that the maximum amount this note had previously been sold for was US$384,000, approximately R$1.9 million, recorded in September 2020.

This recent sale, for US$480,000, set an impressive new record for notes from this year of issue.

According to information from PMG, only four other US$ 10,000 notes from the System with the same features were classified in the same way, and only five of them received a higher.

The $10,000 bill is notable for being the largest denomination bill ever circulated publicly, according to information from the American Museum of Finance.

It is worth mentioning that the US$10,000 bill was used exclusively for transfers between Federal Reserve banks and was not available for public circulation.

Due to lack of use and changes in financial practices, currency notes with denominations equal to or greater than US$500 were discontinued in 1969, according to information from the United States Department of Engraving and Printing United.
