The image proves that the bite had an appearance similar to an allergy, with the arm, hand and fingers completely swollen and red.
Even after the injuries were treated and cleaned, the allergic reaction persisted for the next few hours, which caught the attention of the medical team.
To combat the bacteria, the patient had to take a combination of three oral antibiotics. Doctors took blood and tissue samples to investigate the cause of this exaggerated body response.
The “unknown disease” was caused by a bacterium belonging to the genus Globicatella, the same associated to rare forms of diseases such as meningitis, pyelonephritis (inflammation of the kidneys) and infections of the urinary.
The researchers highlight that bacteria of the Globicatella genus constitute a small group, with Globicatella sanguinis the only species previously known to cause infections in humans.
