Vitória's birthday: capital of Espírito Santo turns 472

The city of Vitória turns 472 years old this September 8th. There are more than four centuries of history with many important moments in the construction of Brazil.

To better understand the meaning of Vitória's birthday, we went to talk to the teacher Maria do Carmo Policante de Souza, from the Municipal Elementary School (Emef) Rita de Cássia Oliveira. See what we discovered:

Origin of Victory's Birthday

According to the teacher, Maria do Carmo, Vitória was the second village to be founded by the grantee of region, Vasco Fernandes Coutinho. The conquest of the place was due to a dispute with the indigenous people who lived in the region.

The choice of the territory to establish the new group was due to its geographical characteristics. Because Vitória is an island, the city provides more protection for boats docking and against land invasions.

The first name of the region was Guananira, an indigenous name that means Ilha do Mel, was later called Vila Nova by the Portuguese. But, after a great battle against the native people, in 1551, the city was named Vila Nossa Senhora da Vitória.

Vitória's birthday: how is it celebrated?

The anniversary of the city of Vitória is celebrated with great celebration by the city's inhabitants. There are artistic presentations, shows with artists from Espírito Santo, theatrical workshops, work exhibitions, sporting events, dances, storytelling and even a gastronomic festival, according to the teacher.

In fact, a large cake is cut to the sound of Congratulations in the city's postcard, Parque Moscoso. However, the vast program takes place in different parts of the metropolis.

Identity and nature of Vitória

The city of Victory has the main biome the Atlantic Forest which, according to the professor, provides a series of benefits for the Victorian population. Among these advantages are climate regulation, air and water purification, pollination of agricultural crops and research opportunities.

The region's natural beauty and biodiversity also attract many tourists from other parts of Brazil. In fact, this is because the Atlantic Forest is a biome with serious rates of deforestation, but there are preservation areas close to Vitória.

The identity of the Victorian people was constructed in a way similar to that of other large Brazilian cities, the influences of the Portuguese, indigenous people and Africans they are very present. According to the educator, Maria do Carmo, miscegenation is one of the characteristics of Vitória's culture.
