Of course, making your own cheese at home can be a rewarding and delicious experience. And the good news is that you can make a simple cheese with just three ingredients that are usually on hand in most kitchens.
For this you will only need milk, lemon or vinegar (acid) and salt. But after all, how is it possible to make your own cheese with these simple ingredients?
How to prepare this artisanal cheese?
First of all, start by heating an appropriate amount of milk in a pan. This amount will depend on how much cheese you want to make.
Generally, 1 liter of milk is a good starting point. When the milk is hot (but not boiling), add the acid. This could be freshly squeezed lemon juice or white vinegar.
Use about 1/4 cup of acid to 1 liter of milk. Once done, stir well. Therefore, as you add the acid and stir, you will notice that the milk will begin to form solid curds and separate from the liquid (whey).
Continue stirring until separation is complete. Then use cheese cloth or clean cheesecloth to drain the curds from the liquid. Let it drain for a few minutes, pressing gently to extract excess liquid.
Seasoning is an optional part and at this point you can add salt to taste to flavor the cheese. Don't forget to stir well to distribute the salt evenly.
Furthermore, you can shape the cheese into a ball, square, or whatever shape you prefer. Place it in the fridge for a few hours to firm up.
Finally, your homemade cheese is ready to enjoy! Serve with bread, biscuits or whatever you prefer. Remember that this is a simple cheese, known as “fresh cheese” or “homemade cheese”.
You can try different variations by adding fresh herbs, peppers or other ingredients to customize the flavor.
Making cheese at home can be a creative and fun process, so feel free to explore and experiment with different flavors and textures.
