Study reveals that smart glasses can generate a 'power imbalance'; look!

Research carried out by universities in the United States examined the experiences of both glasses wearers and augmented reality as well as those who interact with these users.

Augmented reality glasses, also known as smart glasses, have been identified as potential causes of power imbalance in social interactions, raising relevant concerns related to privacy and control.

Researchers from Cornell University and Brown University, both based in the United States, highlighted these issues in their study.

Jenny Fu, a doctoral student at Cornell University, presented her study findings during the 2023 ACM Designing Interactive Systems Conference.

The focus of the research was to provide a deeper understanding of how augmented reality (AR) glasses influence both parties involved in an interaction.

As these products advance in their evolution, they tend to become more discreet and similar in appearance to regular glasses.

Technological progress raises concerns related to the possibility of unauthorized recording or manipulation by people, as indicated by university research.

In the study, researchers collaborated with experts from both universities to carefully examine the dynamics of interactions involving smart glasses.

This same study involved five pairs of participants, each consisting of one user of the augmented reality glasses and another who did not wear the same glasses.

These pairs were invited to discuss desert survival activities while wearing Spectacles, a prototype pair of glasses provided by Snap Inc.

Spectacles included a video camera and filters that had the ability to transform users' appearance.

After the activity, participants discussed to share their insights on how to improve the technology.

Glasses wearers claimed to experience a reduction in anxiety, attributing it to the fun filters that altered their perceptions of reality.

However, non-users experienced feelings of disempowerment as they were unable to perceive the augmented reality occurring on the other side of the lens.

Furthermore, filters affected the ability to control one's appearance, and the possibility of secret recording further exacerbated these feelings of inequality and loss of control.
