A team of archaeologists has located a 1,000-year-old mummy in a residential neighborhood in Peru. The discovery surprised everyone due to the position of the mummy and its state of preservation. Furthermore, it was found in the country's capital, along with other ceramic artifacts.

The region is already known as a historic place that holds many stories about the formation of the South American country and the people who inhabited the ancient Peruvian villages. Thus, the mummy and the artifacts were in an area of archaeological site from Huaca Pucllana, in Miraflores.

“I find it very interesting that, right in the heart of Miraflores, in the middle of the city, surrounded by modern buildings and constructions, an important site, the Huaca Pucllana ceremonial center, is still preserved,” said Mirella Ganoza, leader of the archaeologists.

Initial analyzes indicate that the mummy is of an individual who lived during the Ychsma culture, a millennium ago. Apparently, this culture was present on the central coast of the country, before the arrival of the Incas in the region. Therefore, archaeologists suggest that this was a period of great readaptation of Peruvian society.

When they found the mummy, researchers noted that she had long hair and her jaw was almost completely intact. “This is an adult individual sitting with his legs bent,” said Mirella Ganoza.

Another point observed is that fabrics, ceramic vases and other artifacts were found alongside the remains.

The historical importance of the discovery in Peru

For researchers, the region in which the mummy was located is one of the main points of research into ancient people. Other mummies and objects from antiquity have been found there.

This archaeological site is known as the 'Pandora's box' of Peru's history, where countless historical artifacts can still be found.

Thus, the discovery of the mummy and the surrounding artifacts represents an important step towards research into the customs, beliefs and traditions of the ancestors who inhabited Peru and Latin America.
