Digital art: what it is and what its types are (with examples)

Digital art is any artistic manifestation created using electronic media, such as various software.

These works can be made using simple resources, such as cell phones, or more complex technologies, which allow the creation of large and impactful works, immersive exhibitions, for example.

In addition to music, digital art manifests itself in practically all creative languages, from photography and video to sculpture and some experiments in literature.

Digital sculpture

Also called 3D modeling, it is produced using software that creates images that appear to have height, width and depth.

There is also the possibility of materializing the previously virtual sculpture using 3D printing machines.

Video mapping

This is a video projection technique on large previously chosen surfaces. It consists of mapping the place and projecting images designed specifically for the locations.

It is usually done at important monuments. There is also the use of video mapping to hold immersive exhibitions of great artists.

Digital animation

The cartoons produced today are all created using computerized technology.

Drawings and movements are created using advanced programs and are commonly used in cinema and advertising.

Pixel art

It is a type of image created using pixels, that is, small electronic dots that make up the images. These dots are checkered, generating a very characteristic effect, called "pixelated".

Emergence of digital art

Considered one of the aspects of contemporary art, digital art evolves as technology advances. It gained its name in the 80s and one of its precursors was the musician Pierre Henry, who carried out many sound experiments produced with the help of electronic equipment.

Another important name in the emergence of this type of art was the British Harold Cohen, creator of the AARON electronic system, programmed to create images autonomously. The artist invented this system in the 70s, but it was in the 80s that he created more elaborate images.

Since then, other artists have been venturing into their creative processes and increasingly taking advantage of new technologies.
