Acre is the westernmost state in the North region, its territorial extension is 164,122,280 square kilometers. According to the population count carried out in 2010 by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the state totals 733,559 inhabitants, distributed in five micro-regions (Basel, Cruzeiro do Sul, Rio Branco, Sena Madureira and Tarauacá), where 22 counties.
Its population is composed of several immigrants, among them the following stand out: northeastern, southerners and paulistas. The indigenous population totals 14,318 people.

Acre's demographic growth is 2.8% per year, with a low demographic density, approximately 4.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. The majority of the population resides in urban areas (72.6%), while residents of rural areas add up to 27.4%. The population division according to sex is as follows: men 50.2%, women 49.8%.
Rio Branco, a city that houses almost half of the state's population
Rio Branco, capital of Acre, is the most populous city in the state, with a total of 336,038 inhabitants, that is, almost half of Acre's population. Other populous cities are: Cruzeiro do Sul (78,507), Sena Madureira (38,029), Tarauacá (35,590), Feijó (32,412), Brasileia (21,398).
Less than 40% of the population has access to treated water, access to the sewage system is also quite restricted, benefiting only 34.8% of the inhabitants. The illiteracy rate is 15.4% and the infant mortality rate is approximately 28.9 deaths per thousand live births, reflected in the life expectancy of Acre, which is 71 years. All these factors are responsible for the average Human Development Index (HDI), which currently stands at 0.751, making with Acre occupying the 17th position in the national ranking, being the penultimate among the northern states, just ahead of Roraima.
