One of the items is the “El Cristiano” cannon, a unique piece of artillery with a past shrouded in symbolism and controversy.
Created from the melting of Paraguayan church bells, the cannon served as a fearsome weapon during the Battle of Curupaiti in 1866, when it was directed against Brazilian forces.
Over the decades, the weapon was transported and eventually became a prominent piece in the Epitácio Pessoa courtyard of the National History Museum in Rio de Janeiro.

However, “El Cristiano” is just one of many relics removed from the Paraguayduring the war.
Around 500 items are believed to have been taken, including 330 fire hydrants, 94 pavilions flags, 17 banners and even military files and personal effects of Paraguayan dictator Solano López and his family.
The current request for the return of war trophies was made by the president of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, who took office recently.
Peña emphasizes that these objects are part of the Paraguayan government's heritage and deserve to be repatriated. He expressed his desire to dialogue with the president Lula to reach an understanding on the issue.
