When did it come about?
The origin of Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving dates back to colonial times in the United States. The first time the day was celebrated was in 1621 in Plymouth, Massachusetts colony.
After the difficulties faced by the British, the first time they manage to settle in American lands, they decide to celebrate. As a thank you for the productive harvest they had, the colonizers would have invited the indigenous people (Wampanoag) who inhabited the region to celebrate the conquest together.
According to Edward Winslow's account, in the work Mout's Relation, the party lasted three days and had the participation of 53 Englishmen and 90 indigenous people.
Among the foods present were pumpkin, corn and beans, which are considered sacred by the indigenous people. Over time these ingredients became traditional and are still present in the dishes served on Thanksgiving Day.
There are criticisms about the most told narrative about the history of the date. This version established a romanticization, and according to these critics, it would have softened the conflicts experienced between colonizers and natives.
Do not stop now... There's more after the publicity ;)
The official date as a national holiday in the United States took place in 1863 by the then president Abraham Lincoln. At the time, it was decided that the celebration would take place on the last Thursday of November.
The date is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November from 1941, due to the bill signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt.
