O French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard died on Tuesday, September 13, at the age of 91. The director is the icon of new wave, an important artistic movement of the french cinema.
According to information from the Reuters agency, the death was confirmed by the filmmaker's wife, Anne-Marie Miéville. The artist would have died at home, peacefully and close to his loved ones.
Godard was born in Paris in 1930.

The French cinematographic movement was created at the end of the 1950s and was related to the typical protest movement of the 1960s. Godard was one of the founders of the movement that presented new paradigms of aesthetics to film productions around the world.
Some of the characteristics of this movement are the sudden cuts, camera in hand and the existence of existential dialogues in the script.

Construction
As a filmmaker, Godard made his debut in 1959 with the premiere of "besieged". The film was performed in improvisation, without a script. Filming took place based on the director's inspiration.
The film changed the parameters of film editing and filming. With his works, Godard freed cinema from the conventions of the typical single form.
Another highlight of the director's work is "Je Vous Salue, Marie", from 1985. The film caused controversy in conservative sectors, especially with the Catholic Church, and was even rejected by Pope John Paul II and banned in Brazil.
Altogether, the director made more than 40 feature films, as well as documentaries, essays, short films and clips.

In 2014, for "Farewell to Language", he won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. He has also received honors for his career at major film awards such as the César, Oscar and at Cannes.
Retirement
Godard announced in March 2021 that he would retire. At the time, aged 90, the director informed that he would make two more films and would say goodbye to his life as a filmmaker.

Godard's impact left the cinema screens and traveled through the other arts. On Brazilian soil, the director is quoted in several songs, perhaps the most famous quote is in "Eduardo and Monica", from the band Legião Urbana.
