Earthquakes in Türkiye: read what these natural phenomena are

On the morning of Monday, February 6, a earthquake of magnitude 7.8 hit Turkey and northwest Syria.

O earthquake was one of the strongest the region since 1939. It spawned a series of aftershocks, the last of which reached magnitude 7.6. Earth tremors were felt in Israel, Cyprus and Lebanon.

According to government information, 912 people died in Turkey, while in Syria the death toll was 326.

To date, more than 50,000 people have been injured and thousands are missing.

Why do earthquakes happen?

Earthquakes are natural phenomena generated by the Earth's internal pressures, which make tectonic plates move around.
