Now, our country is looking for another award for its beaches: the official title of “smallest beach in the world”. Currently, the Guinness Book considers the beach of Gulpiyuri, in Spain, as the smallest on the planet.
However, more than one Brazilian city could be in the running for the title. The first competitor is Praia da Paciência, in the city of Penha, in Santa Catarina. The territory with 20 meters of sand already boasts the reputation of being, at least, the smallest beach in Brazil.
But, the city of Ubatuba (SP) declared that it will officially register a small strip of sand, located on Ilha Rachada, as the true owner of the world title.
The smallest beach in the world could be in Brazil
According to the declarations of the municipality, the strip of sand is located to the north of the city of Ubatuba. Called Ilha Rachada or Ilha da Selinha, the territory is 18 kilometers from the mainland. It is exactly in this distant place that there is a small space of sand with only 4.30 meters in length.
Even though it is considered the opposite side of the island in the calculation, it is noticed that it is necessary to walk about 15 meters around the island. In addition, the stretch is narrow and has an average width of two meters in the territory, where only one area is four meters.
The strip of sand is so tiny that it barely fits a small group of tourists or a few beach chairs. According to a report by UOL: “In the sand area, it is possible to open only one parasol. Or take three steps.”

Smallest beach in the world does not allow disembarkation
The region is part of Ubatuba's speedboat itineraries, however, landing is prohibited on the island, precisely because of the lack of security in the space to accommodate tourists and theenvironmental preservation.
So even if the region becomes popular with the title, visitors will not be able to access the region. As a result, Édson Magalhães, who is responsible for boat trips in the area, stated that:
“To get to the sand strip there is a cluster of stones that generate strong waves, according to the strength of the sea, which could cause serious accidents during the embarkation and disembarkation of tourists. In addition, there is the issue of environmental preservation of Ilha Rachada”.
For all these reasons, the guides adopted a ban on boarding and disembarking as a security measure to protect visitors.
Even though this small strip of Brazilian sand measuring 4.30 meters is not officially recognized as the smallest beach in the world, the news demonstrated the importance of preserving the country's small natural treasures.
Definitely, the balance between sustainable tourism and environmental preservation is the key to ensure international recognition of unique places, such as the city of Ubatuba and its small beach.
