The 10 SUVs that most attract robbers, according to an insurance manager

Rodrigo Boutti is operations manager at the Ituran theft and robbery insurance company and issues a warning about the car models that are currently being the most desired by robbers.

The manager says that the growth in robberies and thefts of sports cars is due to the fact that these models are currently the most sold. These vehicles are in greater circulation since the sanitary measures adopted during the pandemic caused by the Covid 19 virus were relaxed.

During the pandemic, there was still a lack of spare parts for these models, so the objective of the robbers was to take the cars to the dismantling to illegally supply this lack of parts own.

Assaults on SUVs

New vehicles increased significantly, with this, there was a drop in purchasing power and the fleet ended up aging. This fact also contributes a lot to arrive at the average number of SUV robberies in São Paulo.

Ituran, using data from the Public Security Secretariat of São Paulo as a basis, found that only in the period between January and October of this year there were 7,080 records of occurrences of sport utility vehicles in São Paul. Compared to the same period last year, there was an increase of 61.3%.

In September, there were 844 occurrences involving robbery or theft of SUVs, and in the following month the number increased, reaching 974. With that, so far there are 8,898 occurrences this year. This number gives an average of 889 robberies or thefts of SUVs per day, remembering that, only in São Paulo.

The difference between assault under threat and theft is small, but thefts represent 51.03% of the situation. This can have two explanations, Boutti points out that in situations of theft the penalty is lower and it is more difficult for the victim to prove that he suffered the theft. Vehicles that are assaulted, and not stolen, are only assaulted because of the technological resources available in cars that do not allow for a theft. In addition, when the car is stolen, it indicates that the assailant's objective was exclusively the vehicle.
