In Australia, a family taking a road trip got into trouble when they strictly followed the path traced by Google Maps. According to reports, the application suggested that the family leave the paved road to follow a dirt path, responsible for bogging the car in a remote and lonely place.
Police say the family was reported missing on August 8, after more than 48 hours leaving home for a trip that was supposed to last just 16 hours. Thus, the police, together with volunteers and friends, began the search for the family, who were found without cell phone signal, hungry and without water, about 50 km from the nearest town. They were desperate and afraid of dying in the heat of the Australian desert.
Be careful when using location apps
Because information is always in the palm of your hand, many people forget to memorize or learn paths. In fact, some don't even like to ask where they are going or where that path might lead. However, care must be taken when using online applications such as Google Maps or Waze, because the paths are not always reliable. Some examples are with application drivers, who report entering highly dangerous places due to the map indication.
This could be because the map is out of date, because of some work on the way or even because of a change in traffic made by the city hall. Thus, as the GPS of the applications indicates the shortest route, the driver needs to be careful not to fall into traps and make a safe trip.
