The number of students with special needs grows

In the last five years, from 2014 to 2018, the number of enrollments of students with special needs grew by 33.2% across the country. The data are from the School Census released by Inep.

In the same period, the percentage of those included in common classes also increased from 87.1% to 92.1%.

In 2014, there were 886,815 students with disabilities, high abilities and pervasive developmental disorders enrolled in Brazilian schools. This number has been increasing year by year. In 2018, it reached around 1.2 million. Between 2017 and 2018, there was an increase of approximately 10.8% in enrollments.

According to Census data, the public network has the highest rate of students in common classes. In schools, 97.3% of students with special educational needs were in these classes in 2018. In the private network, the percentage was 51.8%.

By law, through the National Education Plan (PNE), Brazil must include all students aged 4 to 17 in school. Students with special needs should preferably be enrolled in common classes.

For this, Brazil must guarantee the entire inclusive educational system, multifunctional resource rooms, classes, schools or specialized services, public or associated.

According to Census data, 38.6% of public elementary schools and 55.6% of private ones have bathrooms for people with special needs. In addition, also in elementary education, 28% of public schools and 44.7% of private ones have facilities suitable for people with special needs.

In high school, 60% of public schools and 68.7% of private schools have a special bathroom and 44.3% of public and 52.7% of private schools have adequate facilities. With information from Agência Brasil.
