Now, after impressive initial box office sales and rave reviews, the next chapter has been greenlit. The news was announced in a series of social media posts, with a tantalizing teaser poster for Part Two.
In a statement, Villeneuve said, "Just got word from Legendary that we are officially moving forward with Dune: Part Two. It was a dream of mine to adapt Frank Herbert's Dune and I have to thank the fans, the cast and crew, Legendary and Warner Bros. for supporting this dream. This is just the beginning.”
Previously, the director indicated that he was "ready to do" filming the second part next year if he got the green light. He is now planning an October 2023 release date. Only two years to go, folks.
The following are mild spoilers for the first part.
The second film will see the return of Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides, and a much bigger role for Zendaya's Chani - who was only slightly introduced in the first installment.
