A Brazil's flag was created by Raimundo Teixeira Mendes, Miguel Lemos, Manuel Pereira Reis and Décio Vilares on the day November 19th of 1889, shortly after the Proclamation of the Republic, on the 15th of November of the same year.

- Verde — Mentions the people who inhabited Portugal more than two thousand years ago and the Portuguese struggle for freedom.
- Yellow — Color used in the coat of arms of Portugal after the conquest of the Algarve in 1250. Also, it can represent the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, dynasty of D. Leopoldine, wife of d. Pedro I.
- Blue and White — Blue and white were adopted as the colors of some Hereditary Captaincies in Brazil and became popular.
