It will be easier for Portuguese grandchildren

In the case of those who are children of Portuguese parents, whether biological or adopted, the process for citizenship is relatively easy. However, for many years, the procedure was more complicated for grandchildren, who needed their parents to also have citizenship.

However, with the new law, grandchildren of Portuguese parents can apply for citizenship even if their parents are not citizens. With this, the trips to and from the country are reduced and the money spent on property rentals or even the requirement of a formal job to obtain it. This measure should above all facilitate the process for Brazilians who make up the majority of foreigners in the country.

news for the married

Another group that will benefit from the changes is made up of those whose spouse is Portuguese, both by marriage and by stable union. That's because now, with only three years of stable union, it will be possible to apply to gain citizenship. In addition, it becomes unnecessary for the couple to have children, as long as they comply with this minimum time.

On the other hand, the rules will follow the same for the case of great-grandchildren, in which it was necessary for parents, grandparents or great-grandparents to have proven citizenship. Even so, there are chances that, with this change, they may also apply to these groups.

It is worth noting that the process for completing the application for citizenship in Portugal usually takes two to three years. In the meantime, the person can get temporary visas for work or study.
