Developed in 1835 by the painter and inventor Samuel Finley Breese Morse, the Morse Code is a binary system of representation to distance of numbers, letters and graphic signs, using short and long sounds, as well as dots and dashes to transmit posts.

This system is made up of all letters of the alphabet and all numbers. Characters are represented by a specific combination of dots and dashes as shown in the table above. To form the words, just make the correct combination of symbols.

Messages are transmitted through intervals of sound (whistle) or light (lantern), which can be captured by various devices, such as, for example, the radiotelegraph and the telegraph. This means of communication was widely used by sailors during the nineteenth century. The first marine rescue record after a distress call using Morse Code occurred in 1899, in the Straits of Dover.

In the mid-nineteenth century, the use of Morse Code quickly became popular, reaching virtually all European countries. In 1865, after making some changes to the system, the International Telegraphic Congress regulated the International Morse Code, which provided greater dynamism to communications.

With the invention of the telephone at the end of the 19th century, the Morse Code fell into disuse. The development of new, more effective communication technologies led to the replacement of this system by other devices. In France, for example, the Morse Code is no longer used by major navigations since 1997.
