Armenia is a nation located in the far east of Europe, close to the border with the Asian continent. It borders Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Iran. The country is the smallest of the former republics of the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
The Caucasus mountain range extends throughout the territory and reaches its highest point on Mount Ararat. The occupation of this territory is quite old, around 700 years a. a., becoming province of the Persian Empire.
The country joined the USSR, but in 1990, with the fragmentation of the Soviet Union, Armenia held elections and over 99% of voters opted for the independence of the country, which was recognized in 1991, that same year the nation joined the Commonwealth of Independent States (CEI).
The country's economy is based on agriculture and livestock and the food and beverage industry. The country is currently chaired by Serj Sargsyan.
