RG loses place to CPF as an identity number

The Government will adopt a change in the identity card, which will be called ID card National (CIN). The main change is that now the card number will be the Individual Taxpayer Registration (CPF) and no longer the General Registry (RG), as was done previously. This change in the RG will reduce the risk of scams and fraud with the number, which is issued by the Federal Revenue in the country, while the RG is issued by the state authority.

As of March, the CIN will be issued, a new identity card that carries the CPF, unlike the old one, which carried the citizen's RG. This change seeks to reduce the number of frauds, since the RG is a state number, which allows it to be issued in each state by the same person.

The CPF is a number issued by the Federal Revenue, so that each person has only one.

What's new?

Now, from the CPF, the Government can have access to various data of an individual, such as

driver's license, voter registration card, work card, NIS, etc. This unification process will be done organically, therefore, it is not necessary to change your documentation if it is not expired.

Documents that need renewal will have the CPF included when they expire. Documents that are not renewable, such as the Birth Certificate, will only have the CPF included if a duplicate is issued.

The new documents, issued after the move, will already come with CPF included.

Under the new rule, documents with an expiration date of up to February 23, 2032 remain valid, so that the transition can occur gradually and passively and the CIN reaches the entire population.

The issuance of the first copy of the new card, the CIN, will continue to be free.

In practice, which documents change?

With the replacement of the RG by the CPF, some documents will undergo changes at some point. Are they:

  • Birth certificate;
  • Wedding certificate;
  • Death certificate;
  • Voter title;
  • National Identification Document (DNI);
  • National Health Card (CNS);
  • Social Integration Program number (NIS/PIS);
  • Permission to Drive (PPD) and National Driver's License (CNH);
  • Work and Social Security Card (CTPS).
