Check out 5 dog breeds that went extinct
As of 2016, the International Cynological Federation (FCI) has recognized 339 existing dog breeds. However, that number would be even higher if extinct dog breeds were added to the account. In this sense, check out some of the most famous ones below.
- cuban dogo
The Cuban dogo was a breed that disappeared because it had lost its function. These dogs, strong and intelligent, have Cuban origin and emerged from the crossing of the Mastiff and the Bulldog.
With a strong temperament, they were often used by farmers to terrorize and torture enslaved people.
Since the main function of the Cuban dogo was to hunt fugitives, when slavery came to an end in the second half of the 19th century, its existence lost its meaning. Therefore, little by little, the breed was mixed with others and they became extinct.
- Cordoba fighting dog
The Córdoba Fighting Dog is an extinct breed that was bred in Argentina. Some canine enthusiasts have decided to cross different breeds such as mastiff, boxer and bulldog. Resulting in a strong, brave and aggressive dog.
The breed was very successful in wrestling, but it was so aggressive that it didn't last long. According to some accounts, the males and females were at odds with each other and fought instead of mating. With that, the fighting dog of Córdoba ended up being extinct. But it gave rise to a more famous breed: the Argentine dogo, which, despite being strong, has a calmer personality.
- Turnspit
Turnspits are the most talked about dogs when it comes to extinct breeds. Having appeared in the 16th century, they were very functional. In kitchens in England, employees put the breed to walk inside hamster-like wheels.
This movement made by the dogs was to help cook meat and vegetables on a roller. Today, this type of activity may seem cruel, but the practice was quite common.
Technological innovations ended the forced labor of turnspits, causing their loss of function. Over time, as there was no longer a need to put them on training wheels, they were crossed with other dogs and lost their characteristics. Thus, becoming an extinct race.
- Moscow water dog
The Moscow Water Dog was bred by the Soviets at the end of World War II. The researchers wanted to create a breed that was a natural swimmer so that they could save people from drowning.
This is how, through different crossings, the Moscow Water Dog emerged. But, as much as he was an excellent swimmer, his temper was quite angry.
So much so that, when they found a drowning person, they attacked instead of helping. Therefore, the race, little by little, became extinct.
- brazilian tracker
In the 50s, a farm owner named Oswaldo Aranha Filho decided to create a breed that was fast and strong for hunting. However, it could not be confused with the jaguars of the Atlantic Forest.
Then, from different crossings, the Brazilian tracker emerged, an agile dog with a white and black coat. The breed was recognized by the FCI in 1967.
However, after an epidemic of tick disease and intoxication by excessive pesticides, the breed became extinct. Over time, the Brazilian tracker was declared extinct and dropped from the FCI breed list.
