The animal called black-naped pheasant pigeon, which was discovered in 1883 and never seen since, was again found on an island of Papua New Guinea. The bird is the size of a pigeon, with differences in plumage, as his is black.
With more than 140 years without records of the species, an expedition was carried out to try to spot the animal in 2019, on the island Ferguson, in Papua New Guinea, which remained totally unfruitful, which led to believe that it was about the extinction of the animal.

However, a team from the Laboratory of Ornithology at Cornell University did not believe in the disappearance of the species, taking six members to spend a month on that island, in search of the missing animal. The observers' method was to install several cameras and analyze the material afterwards.
In addition, the local population was used as a source, asking hunters, residents and other inhabitants and professionals who frequent the forest. However, everything showed that they would return to the United States empty-handed.
So, with two days left for the team's return, with the cameras already collected, they managed to spot the bird! The team celebrated the event a lot, with the following statement made by John Mittermeier, part of the team: “It's brief, but after a month of totally futile searches, it's like we've found a unicorn! In other words, it's exactly the kind of moment you live for when you're an ornithologist."
Check out the moment the bird appears in the recordings:

At the tweet it says “I am very excited to share the first video of the black-naped pheasant pigeon, a species of Papua New Guinea lost to science for 140 years!”.
After analyzing the images captured in September, the identification of the bird was confirmed and validated, and it is no longer considered extinct. However, analyzing the time needed to find a species, it is demonstrated that there are not many left on the island.
Thus, it is important not to reduce the chances of survival of this bird, that is, not invading and destroying their habitat.
