Get to know the new version of the RG and find out how to request the document

The National Identity Card (CIN) will arrive to replace the presentation of the RG (General Registry) throughout Brazil. Some states will issue the new document from January. Thus, in the very near future, the RG will no longer be used. Now, the valid numbering will only be that of the CPF (Individual registration).

The documentation came into effect in July, when the states of Piauí, Goiás, Paraná, Acre, Rio Grande do Sul and Minas Gerais began to issue the CIN. The General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic pointed out that around 105,778 new documents have already been distributed across the country.

States will have until March 2023 to issue the documentation. By the end of next year, all states must issue the CIN.

The new identity will begin to be issued in January for the states of Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso, São Paulo, Federal District and Amazonas. O

document will only have the CPF number, as the RG will no longer be valid throughout the country. The difference in numbering is the main attraction of the document.

The motivation for unifying the document came from a simple observation by the government: all states could issue their own version of the RG, meaning that only a Brazilian could issue the document throughout the national territory with numbers many different.

This was a great loophole for fraud and scams. However, the CPF has only one number for each citizen. Therefore, it will become the only one used to identify Brazilians

The CIN may be issued in digital and physical versions. To access the digital version, you will need to issue the physical version first. With the CIN in hand, just download the Gov.br app, and you will have access to the digitized version.

Will the old document need to be exchanged by CIN?

It is not mandatory to change the documentation for now. If you want to replace it, you won't have to pay for the change when the document passes its expiration date.

The new documentation has an expiry date that will depend on the age of the holder. Children up to 11 years old must change every 5 years; from 12 to 59 years of age, the change will be every 10 years and, for those over 60, the change does not need to be made. The bodies that carry out the issuance are the Public Security Secretariats.
