Similar to James Gunn, Zhao was tasked with introducing a new lineup of superheroes to the MCU that was not previously known to the mainstream. The starting lineup is led by Angelina Jolie as Thena and Salma Hayek as Ajak, along with other familiar faces like Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani and Gemma Chan.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Chloé Zhao was asked about the consequences of Eternals in the MCU. While she couldn't be too specific, Zhao said the film will define the MCU's origins by "exploring the mythology of the Celestials," which "will have repercussions going forward."
“I can't say anything! I can't say anything, but one thing I can say is that we knew the origin of the MCU would be set to some extent in this film, exploring the mythology of the Celestials. We know this will have repercussions in the future.”
The fact that Eternals also explores the making of the MCU itself should be an intriguing prospect for fans. The alien race has lived on Earth for thousands of years, which gives Zhao the chance to not only revisit events from previous films and recontextualize them, but human history as well.
