Brazilian physician, critic and literary historian born in Salvador, BA, one of the main responsible for the dissemination, in Brazil, of the aesthetic analysis criteria formulated by New Criticism American. He graduated in medicine (1926), a profession he gave up to pursue a literary career. He obtained the chair of literature (1936) at Colégio Pedro II, in Rio de Janeiro (1947) and at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Instituto Lafayette, created (1948) the first chair of literary theory and technique of the parents.
In the same year he began writing the section "Current Currents", in the Literary Supplement of the Diário de Notícias, through which he projected himself as a critic. He became professor of Brazilian literature (1958) and director of the Faculty of Arts at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
Member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (1962), his main works were Machado de Assis' philosophy (1940), Aspectos da Baroque literature (1950), On criticism and new criticism (1957), Concept of Brazilian literature (1960), Criticism and criticism (1969). He also organized and directed the edition of A Literature in Brazil (1955-1971) and edited the Critical Work by Araripe Júnior (1958-1963). He was co-director, with J. Galante de Sousa, from the Encyclopedia of Brazilian Literature (1990).
