Abilio Pereira de Almeida

Brazilian lawyer and playwright born in São Paulo, SP, whose plays were remarkably successful with the public, against the critics, who considered them inconsistent. Graduated in law from the University of São Paulo, he also studied at the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters at USP and at the Escola de Aviação Militar. He joined the Army (1927) and participated in two revolutions (1930/1932). He was a lawyer for a few years while he published Legal and commercial practice and edited the Revista Judiciária.

He debuted as a theatrical actor (1936) and, six years later, he joined the Experimental Theater Group, GTE, founded by Alfredo Mesquita. After the success of plays such as Pif-paf (1942) and The woman of the next (1948), he became practically the only Brazilian playwright to write for the famous Teatro Brasileiro de Comédia. He was one of the founders of Cia. Cinematographic Vera Cruz, in which he began to act (1950) also as an actor, director and producer. His name has appeared as an actor, author or director in around 25 national films, including those that launched Mazzaroppi and made him one of the biggest hits in Brazilian cinema.

Do not stop now... There's more after the advertising ;)

With a total of 688 documentary items (550 textual and 138 photographic), the public considered his pieces to mirror society's ethical misbehavior. Paiol Velho (1951), which Alberto Cavalcanti transformed in the film Terra é semper terra, Santa Marta Fabril S.A. (1955), Moral in bankruptcy (1956) and Currency of the country (1957), were some of his successes. Tragically, he died by suicide in São Paulo.
