German engineer and inventor born in Paris, France, son of German parents, who specialized in machine building, invented (1889) and patented (1892), the internal combustion engine, the engine Diesel. He lived his childhood in Paris (1858-1870) until his family was forced to move to England (1870) due to the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war. From London he traveled to Augsburg, where he continued his studies, completed at the Technical University of Munich, where he would prove to be an outstanding researcher.
He began his professional activities as a collaborator of the refrigeration technician Carl von Linde (1842-1934) and the Based on thermodynamic studies developed by Linde and at his request, he built several machines motives. Dedicating itself to the development of an internal combustion engine that approaches maximum efficiency Theorist proposed by the French physicist Sadi Carnot, developed the idea that would later result in the diesel engine (1890). With the patenting of the invention (1892), he published a theoretical and practical description of its mechanism in the book Theorie und Konstruktion eines rationellen Wärmemotors (1893), exposing his ideas and proposing the construction of an engine to work according to its cycle from the internal combustion engine invented by Nikolaus Otto and using the air-fuel mixture, lowering the cost of operation.
Do not stop now... There's more after the advertising ;)
The diesel engine has become a profitable engine, both in terms of fuel price per liter and in terms of efficiency. Successful in Europe, he emigrated to the United States (1900), and installed the first commercial diesel engine in St. Louis (1898), USA. However, in the New World its development to supply trucks and locomotives was negligible until its original patents expired (1913). Boycotted, disappointed and ruined he returned to Europe and drowned when he fell overboard while crossing the English Channel from Antwerp to London, to some pure suicide. In addition to being a notable theorist of mechanics, he was a man of wide culture, he was a connoisseur of art and a researcher of linguistic issues and social theories of the time.
