King of France (936-954) born in Laon, Aisne, who took the throne of the Frankish kingdom of the west at just 15 years old after his death from King Raul or Rudolf of Burgundy. Son of Charles III the Simple, and Princess Eadgifu of England, he spent his youth in exile in England, hence the nickname d'Outre-mer.
With the death of Raul, he was supported by the nobles to assume the French throne, but under the leadership of the powerful Count of Paris, Hugo Capeto. Crowned (936) he left to fight for the independence of his throne, which displeased Hugo, who allied himself with the Germanic king Otto I against his king. Captured by the Normans (945) the king was handed over to Hugo.
The following year he entered into an alliance with Otto and together they submitted Hugo (950), thus taking full control of power. He was married to Princess Gerberga with whom he had two children, namely his successor (954-986) Lothar (941-986), and Charles (954-986) Duke of Lower Lotharingia (975-986), and died in Reims, Marne, France, victim of a fall from a horse and was buried in Saint Remy Abbey.
