Isabel Flores de Oliva, Santa Rosa de Lima

Peruvian religious born in Lima, capital of the then viceroyalty of Peru, patroness of South America and the Philippines, the first person born on the American continent to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church. From an aristocratic family, he manifested a religious vocation from childhood, although this was not the desire of the family, who saw in his physical beauty a pretext for an advantageous marriage.

Confirmed as Rosa (1597), her family nickname, she took a vow of perpetual chastity, inspired by the model of Saint Catherine of Siena. Finally (1606), her parents were convinced of her unshakable vocation and allowed her to pursue the religious life. Entering the Third Order of St. Dominic, he locked himself in a small cell built in the garden of the family house, where he led an austere, mystical and martyred life.

He wore a crown of thorns, fasted, slept on a bed covered with broken glass and pottery. Living in spiritual communion, he left the cloister (1615) and died at just 30 years of age, in the same city where he was born. Her reputation for holiness spread, she was beatified by Pope Clement IX (1668) and canonized by Pope Clement X (1671). It is celebrated on the 23rd of August.
