Historically, many products have been tested on animals to assess their safety and effectiveness before being marketed for human use.

However, in recent years there has been a growing global movement towards the adoption of alternative testing methods that do not involve the use of animals.

The published measure is valid for testing products that already have components with proven safety and efficacy in their formula. For products with new formulas without proof of safety or efficacy, the standard requires the use of alternative research methods.

According to the coordinator of Concea, Kátia de Angelis, there are recognized methods that involve toxicity dermal with artificial skin and eye irritation with artificial cornea, in total there are 40 methods recognized.

”This makes us, using these alternative methods, able to maintain our autonomy to study new ingredients, products of our biodiversity of the Amazon, for example, with the possibility of not using animals or eventually using a very small number of animals”, explains.

In the European Union, animal testing is already prohibited. With the new decision, Brazil is in line with international law.

For the president of the Brazilian Confederation of Animal Protection, Carolina Mourão, the ban will have a positive impact on the defense of animals.

“This measure, although it is not the end of the use of animals for all types of tests that Brazil covers, spares an enormous number of lives of all kinds of animals we know, from dogs, horses, oxen and birds”.

The ban was approved in December last year at a Concea meeting and signed last Tuesday, the 28th, by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos.
