New RG can be used as a travel document

Earlier this year, the Federal Government announced a series of changes to the main identification document for Brazilians, the Identity Card. Now, citizens' information will be unified through the Individual Taxpayer Registration (CPF). In this way, it will be possible to bring more practicality and security, even allowing the RG to be used as a travel document.

By when should the new RG be made?

According to the Federal Government, the SSP (Public Security Secretariats) of each federative unit will have until March 2023 to adopt the changes. In this way, free of charge, each state will issue the document to citizens. To do this, just present yourself to some identification body.

What are the main changes in the document?

Now, the decree also provides for the adoption of a QR Code system in Identity Cards, similar to what already exists in the National Driver's License (CNH). Because of this, it will be possible to register the RG in the application and present the digital version, which has the same value as the physical version.

Now, with a type of digital wallet, some integrations are made with other documents as well, such as the vaccination card, driver's license and work card. To do so, just go to the Public Security Secretariat with your birth or marriage certificate. Then, a paper will be issued that must be accessed through the government portal.

RG as a travel document

Now that there will be integration with several other documents that contain our data, the new RG will have an international standard, as it will have the Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) code. This same identifier is also present in passports, where it can be read by specialized equipment at airports.

However, it is very likely that the document is valid for international travel only between countries that are part of Mercosur. In addition, the passport is still essential outside Brazilian territory, as it contains important information about the traveler.
