What has changed in the new CNH and when does it come into effect?

What are the main changes of the new CNH?

A new driver's license comes into effect from today throughout the national territory, with novelties for the security of the document. Like all driver's licenses obtained from 2017 onwards, the new CNH will continue to carry the QR Code. This code allows the document to be used at self-service terminals at Brazilian airports.

Unlike the old version, the new CNH will bring a table of vehicles in the documents to identify the driver's category. This will facilitate investigation at police stations and also the hiring of drivers by companies or individuals.

In addition, other minor changes will occur to described information, such as:

• Notes (which may add medical restrictions);
• Signature of the Bearer (including the driver's social name and affective affiliation);
• Place and Date of Issue.

The most obvious change will probably be the color of the document, which will change from dark green to shades of green, yellow, blue and gray. The measure provides for more efficiency to prevent fraud.

Should everyone apply for a new driver's license?

The measure will not be mandatory for all drivers. If you withdraw your National Driver's License after June 1st, you will already receive your document in the new format. On the other hand, if you already have the document, you will only need to request the new version when you need to renew it. Check the validity of your driving license below:

• Drivers up to 49 years old: 10 years;
• Drivers from 50 to 69 years old: 5 years;
• Drivers aged 70 or over: 3 years;

The point limit of the new CNH will also be maintained, which can be checked through the digital wallet.
