Vinyl takes over the throne: sales surpass CDs after more than three decades

For three decades, CDs dominated the market as the most popular way to consume music, largely because of the media's practicality. The heyday of CDs replaced the old vinyl, which became virtually non-existent in some places. No wonder the idea that, in 2022, vinyl sales will surpass CDs for the first time in 36 years!

And you, were you part of this movement to bring the great records back?

Increased vinyl sales

According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), there were more vinyl sales in the United States in 2022 than CDs. More precisely, there were 41 million vinyl record units as opposed to just 30 million CDs. This is the first time this has happened since 1987, when there was a turning point in consumption.

In large part, the rise in vinyl record sales was due to the release of commemorative editions of classic albums. After all, it's fashionable for artists to re-release their work this way as a way to move fans. This fad made its way to younger artists too!

So they ended up joining the sale of vinyl. And so collectors appear, who believe that the piece has a very important historical value, even when it only contains contemporary music. This became a trend, especially among teenagers, who realized that collecting records can have its charm and can be a way of showing appreciation for their idol.

Music in the age of streaming

Furthermore, we cannot fail to mention how the streams influenced a lot for this situation to be established. This is because it is already known that nowadays the main way to listen to music is through platforms such as Spotify, Deezer or YouTube.

There is not much interest in owning CDs, as this purchase is normally limited to a single artist.

Vinyl still has a certain charm with the idea of being a vintage product, but CDS have not yet reached that place of appreciation. So music fans still see the point in buying vinyl for their collection and listening to music on some convenient platform. As a result, CDs may become rare items over time.
