'Russian Mathematics': learn about the method used by millionaires

Have you heard about the schoolsof the Ivy League? Some millionaire parents are paying a fortune for their children to learn math the Russian way. Teaching is known to be quite rigorous and focused on problem solving and exercises. It emphasizes the development of logical and abstract thinking skills from the earliest grades onwards, with an emphasis on a deep understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts.

The style was developed during the Cold War.

Russian math school is popular with the rich

Several "cradle" children as young as 5 years old are already enrolled in various institutions, including a Russian school of mathematics so that they can learn algebra and the principles of multiplication. This school in question was founded by two immigrants from the Soviet Union, Irina Khavinson and Inessa Rifkin, when they were in the United States in 1997. Today, it has 60,000 students across the country, who pay around US$ 3,000 a year.

Anna Latuskiewicz, mother of a 7-year-old girl who attends Russian math classes for two hours a week, said the sky is the limit. ”If she wants to be a doctor, an engineer, math will never hurt. Your math will increase understanding of the world,” said the mother.

In total, there are over 70 such locations across the US; four are in New York City. Founder Inessa Rifkin told The Atlantic in 2016 in an article titled “The Math Revolution” that she inspired to start school by seeing how their own children were learning math in American schools.

“I would tell my kids, ‘Forget the rules! Just think!' And they said, 'That's not how they teach here. That's not what the teacher wants us to do,” Rifkin said in an interview given to the magazine shortly after opening his school.

Russian School of Mathematics and politics

One of the founders blamed Volodymyr Zelensky for the death toll amid the war in Ukraine.

A statement on the website of Russian School of Mathematics denounced the Russian invasion of Ukraine and said the school stands 'unequivocally' against Putin. The statements emphasize that the name of the school has nothing to do with the current Russian regime.

Shortly after the start of the invasion, in March 2022, Inessa Rifkin (founder of the school) wrote on one of the school's Facebook pages that the president Ukrainian Volodymyr Zelenskyy also bore responsibility for the rising death toll, not just Putin.

”Ukraine was given the option to surrender peacefully with minimal human casualties and minimal loss of property to Putin. President Zelensky decided to fight back. He is risking not only his own life, but now thousands of civilians have already lost their lives. Among them, many children,” wrote Rifkin, a native of Belarus, according to WGBH.

Russian Math Tutors

Russian math teachers are highly regarded for their expertise in the science of numbers and their rigorous teaching style. Alexander Kolchinsky, founder of the teaching company, immigrated to the United States from the USSR as a child. Kolchinsky said that the kids in his classes start by learning difficult problems, as opposed to the more common methods of starting with easier ones. According to The Journal, Russian Math Tutors has about 400 students across the country who take classes virtually for $20 an hour.

'We don't hit kids with a ruler, obviously, because it's online. But it's a serious class,' Kolchinsky told the paper.

according to a teacher anonymous, the Russian style can have negative consequences as students are being taught to solve complex problems in their heads instead of writing them down. He goes on to add that having some students with such superior math ability can make other kids feel bad about themselves for being “far behind”.
