'7335(1989 JA)': one of the largest asteroids to come close to Earth to date

If you grew up watching movies about the universe and how small the Earth is, then you must have a keen interest in asteroids. Recently, the NASA verified the approach of a large mass to the earth's surface, the asteroid '7335(1989 JA)'.

What are asteroids?

asteroids are rocky masses composed of a metallic structure that orbit galaxies. It is not known with certainty the origin of these celestial bodies, but two theories are well accepted by the scientific community:

  • Asteroids appeared with the initial explosion: many scientists believe that asteroids are part of the remnants that gave rise to the solar system to which Earth belongs.
  • Asteroids are consequences of collisions: the second theory believes that these pieces of rock come from collisions between planets.

The giant asteroid known as '7335 (1989 JA)'

This asteroid is not new to scientists, as it has been monitored since 1989. Despite looking scary, the rocky body passed by Earth with a distance of 4 million kilometers from our planet and a speed of about 47,232 km / h.

NASA believes that 7335 (1989 JA) will only approach planet Earth again on June 23, 2055.

Is Earth in real danger of being hit by an asteroid?

Although large rocky bodies frequently approach the planet, it is very difficult for any of them to reach Earth. This is explained through the gravity of each body, with larger asteroids suffering less influence from Earth's gravity. Therefore, it is common for only small meteorites to come into contact with Earth over the years. But don't despair, these small meteors don't have the potential to cause major impacts on the planet.
