Brothers die after animal attack and rabies contamination

After being bitten by an animal, two brothers, a boy and a girl, contracted the rabies virus and died a few days apart. So far, it is suspected that both have been bitten by a bat, in Oaxaca, Mexico City.

Last Saturday, the 7th, the local state health department informed that the 8-year-old girl died due to virus from anger. The child was undergoing medical follow-up at the Hospital Geral Doutor Aurélio Valdivieso. Before this case, the girl's brother, aged 7, had died on December 28, also a victim of the same virus.

The virus only comes into contact with the Human Body through an animal bite. Respectively, rabies directly affects the brain and spinal cord of mammals.

It is assumed that the children were bitten on December 1, 2022, but were taken to the clinic three weeks after the episode. The younger sister of these two deceased children, aged 2, was also bitten by the animal. However, she received adequate treatment within the allotted time to avoid contracting the virus.

As per data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Number, cases of rabies are not common in the US. There are an average of three reported cases of rabies per year. About 70% of deaths from rabies occur after exposure to infected bats, making it the leading cause of death from the rabies virus.
