A little about Vorayuth's case
Police Major Wichian Klanprasert was driving a motorcycle on Sukhumvit road in the Thai capital in September 3, 2012, when he was hit by a car and thrown a hundred meters from the scene of the beat. Investigators followed the trail left by the vehicle's brake fluid, leading officers to a luxurious residence owned by one of Thailand's wealthiest families, which was within walking distance of the site of the accident.
Case developments
The facts were denied by the heir, but he later admitted that he was driving the vehicle. Thus, he was arrested on the following charges: Excessive speed, running over, running away and not helping a person in need. After he paid the set bail, he was released. The civil charge was suspended following a nearly $90,000 settlement with the deceased officer's family. However, there is still the possibility of being tried under criminal jurisdiction, and may be sentenced to a sentence of 10 years in prison.
Interpol issued a red alert
Thailand's Attorney General announced new charges against him, following protests in August 2020. With that, a new investigation was launched and a new international arrest warrant was issued for Vorayuth for “reckless driving resulting in death” as well as cocaine use. Colonel Kissana Phathanacharoen, the spokesman accompanying the Thai police, confirmed that Interpol had issued a red notice this week requesting that a person be located and detained by the 194 member countries of the organization.
The drug use charge has expired
A cocaine use charge from the previous month was dropped, leaving Vorayuth's charge only with the fact that the reckless conduct resulted in death (a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison). Furthermore, China's Attorney General's Office stated in an interview that this charge is still valid until 2027. However, few people believe that Vorayuth will face the courts and answer for his actions.
