Concepts Taught: Subtraction
Introduction: Read and sing the story of the Five Ducklings. The melody is present in several children's books.
Development: Discuss what happens to the ducks, how the mother feels when they leave and when they return. Discuss subtracting the number 5 from 1. You can use finger puppets or sing the song again, this time without the book.
Remove each duck as mentioned in the song. A mother duck and the five babies will follow her around the room. Each duck will “disappear” to its designated location and all will return together at the end of the song.
The kids love acting and they never seem to get bored of the music.
