To the surprise of many fans, Netflix has renewed the production contract for the Virgin River series. The platform also announced this week that it will produce two more seasons. That is, seasons 4 and 5 are guaranteed.

The announcement came after the resounding acceptance of the program by the public. Virgin River was among the top 10 most watched series on Netflix for more than 30 days recently. In this case, the audience survey takes into account only the North American public.
To give you an idea, there were 2.1 billion minutes watched over 30 episodes. This is not a mark that any production can reach. Therefore, the renewal already accounts for two new seasons.
Controversy
That a new season would be announced, fans had no doubts. That's because of the open ending that the last episode left. By the way, the third season of the series revolted many viewers.
The protagonist of Virgin River (Mel) has always collected praise and sympathy from viewers. However, the plot of the third season seems to have not impressed.
Mel's story, played by Alexandra Breckenridge, includes struggle and overcoming. The series shows her attempt to overcome the death of her son and husband Mark (Daniel Gillies). Throughout history, on her trip to California, she made friends and collected remarkable moments. Also, Mel fell in love with Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson), the owner of a bar.
Even so, Season 3 seems to have ruined some of the character's endearing build. Virgin River fans have been heavily critical of the show's storyline on Reddit. Although they were disappointed with the direction of the plot, the messages are of hope. Most wait for there to be a turnaround for things to return to their original axis.
What happened to Mel?
Mel and Jack Sheridan break up, as he does not accept having a child with her, in order not to commit. Therefore, the midwife goes in search of a new attempt at in vitro fertilization. She will be using frozen sperm from her deceased husband, Mark. At the end of the season, she tells Jack that she is pregnant, implying that the child is his.
The protagonist's attitude bothered fans too much, as she would have acted immorally. She would not have contacted Jack about her plans, in addition to having become pregnant knowing the position of the other character.
"I just don't see how they're going to get the character back from this horrible plot twist." That's what one of the fans said in comments on the social network.
Controversial or not?
"None of it made sense and the writers should be ashamed of themselves." Another fan panned it, after criticism pointing to Mel's previous character build. According to them, the decision made by the character at the end of the season makes no sense.
There are also comments in defense of the protagonist. Some say that her dream has always been to be a mother and she has never kept it a secret.
Anyway, the truth is that the outcome of this story will only be known from the fourth season. Virgin River is available on Netflix.
