Historically, men age more quickly than women, but this difference has been narrowing. A university in Finland proved in a scientific study that, in the biological aspect, men are older than women, especially when they have habits such as smoking.
Although there is an increase in life expectancy, most women still live longer than men. However, this difference is getting smaller, so we clarify in this article how the researchers reached this conclusion. Check out!

Understand why the difference in biological age between men and women has reduced
This research evaluated some possible causes of biological differences in aging. The participating group consisted of adults, young people and seniors. For the methodological evaluation of biological aging, several epigenetic clocks were used. These devices allow the evaluation of variables related to the useful life of the active subject. In this way, they estimate biological age in years based on DNA methylation levels measured in a blood sample.
The factors that influenced the results were the frequent consumption of tobacco among men, but this was significant in older individuals, and not in young people. In addition, another point identified was the proportional difference of the body. However, this played a small part in the impact of the sex difference in both age groups.
The researchers said that factors other than lifestyle were significant for the sex difference in the rate of aging.
Something very important in this study is that some participants were twins of the opposite sex. And with that, it was possible to state that male siblings were biologically one year older than females. Thus, it was observed that this difference is constructed by hormonal factors, with estrogen being a good ally for delaying aging.
As for the reduction in the difference in years of life between men and women, this is due to the reduction in smoking. Furthermore, the study shows us that in addition to lifestyle factors, genetics is a major influencer.
