The coronavirus pandemic showed what everyone already knew: we are never prepared to say goodbye to people dear ones, mainly in a very precocious way, as it happened in countless situations during the biggest peaks of illness.

In cases of deaths by Covid-19, the traditional wake and farewell rituals were barred, due to the risk of new infections during these events. With that, the moments of loss became even heavier, since it was not possible to have a last farewell.

With that in mind, in May 2020, psychologist Samantha Mucci, from the Department of Psychiatry at

Federal Universityfrom São Paulo, became one of the creators of the Welfare Program (Proalu), an initiative that provides support to families weakened by losses.

The consultations are carried out through the Unified Health System (SUS), by residents in psychiatry. “We trained the residents, at the time there were about 20 Psychiatry residents, all online. We set weekly supervision times and divided the groups”, says Mucci, recalling the beginning of the program in 2020.

Initially, support was given to the families of patients in the Covid-19 at Hospital São Paulo, being made available to other units a while later. Proalu assisted all types of people, from the elderly to adults, who suffered from grief in the face of different situations, and not just those involved in the pandemic.

The search for help should occur when the person, after a certain time, is unable to move on with his life and is at risk of becoming ill. This is because, although it is an extremely painful reality, at a certain point there is a need to keep the memories with a lot of love and move on with life.

In the case of continually reliving the losses, psychological follow-up becomes necessary so that the individual can overcome and continue with their daily activities.
