In world ranking, Brazilian universities do not reach the top 100

study of World University Rankings (CWUR) of 2023 was released and revealed that there is no Brazilian university representing the top 100. However, there are 22 Brazilian institutions representing the 1,000 best universities in the world. The first positions include universities in the United States, with harvard university the biggest in the world.

Secondly, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) represents the list and Stanford University appears as the third largest academic institution. The survey evaluates four criteria for classification, namely employment opportunities, university performance, recognition of faculty composition and academic research.

Certainly, it is not new that the top 10 institutions are represented by 8 North American and two British institutions, with the US almost exclusively dominating. The first Brazilian university appears representing the ninth position after the first 100 in the ranking.

The University of São Paulo (USP) maintained its position as the best Brazilian university, occupying 109th place in the ranking. However, USP dropped four spots from the year 2022. The State University of Campinas (Unicamp), also located in São Paulo, rose three positions in the ranking, moving from 347th to 344th.

The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) dropped in the ranking, moving from position 360 to 376. São Paulo State University (Unesp), also in São Paulo, also had a slight drop, going from 421st to 424th position. On the other hand, the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul showed an improvement, rising from position 474 to 467th.
