How is the impact of light on our health measured?
First of all, it is important to understand why electric light affects our body so much. According to researchers, this is a direct consequence of industrialization and urbanization, which greatly increased people's exposure to electricity. As a result, humans were exposed to much less natural light during the day.
Because of this, based on evidence, scientists began to study how to reduce the damage from exposure to electric light. To do this, they had to determine how to measure the impact of light on our biological rhythm. After all, this energy affects the sleep-wake cycle.
This is because, according to them, the light affects a sensitive protein in our eyes, known as melanopsin, which is very sensitive to the blue light transmitted by televisions. Using this information, they developed a new standard for measuring light, where melanopsin is equivalent to daylight.
Scientists' recommendations
To have a well-regulated sleep, researchers recommend that natural sunlight be our first source of lighting in the day. Also, during the night, the lights should not be drastically turned off. This process must be done at least 3 hours before going to sleep, where we increasingly reduce the lighting units to which we must be exposed.
