‘There are more iPhones in Brazil than population’, says Paulo Guedes

Paulo Guedes, Minister of Economy, received the spotlight last Friday (11) after making comments on the technology market in Brazil. In his speech during the launch of the National Fertilizer Plan, he said that “there are more iPhones in Brazil than there are population”.

“The pandemic threw us quickly into a future we were already living. Our president was already a digital president. We are already the fourth largest digital market in the world. There are more iPhones in Brazil than the population. Brazilians have one, two iPhones, sometimes ”, he said and did not cite the source of the information.

The minister stated that the shortage of fertilizers imported from Russia was essential to anticipate the National Fertilizer Plan. “We are working on the matrix to deepen the production chain towards fertilizers. What this war does is also throw us more quickly into the future.”

inaccurate data

The Getúlio Vargas Foundation did a survey in 2021, there are 242 million smartphones in Brazil, since the Brazilian population is 212.6 million people. Given this, it is shown by the institution that a portion of the population may have two or more cell phones.
However, Apple smartphones are a minority in Brazil, according to StatCounter. The brands most used by Brazilians are Samsung (40.54%), Motorola (26.87%), Xiaomi (11.45%) and LG (9.48%) and finally Apple (9.36%).

The small adherence of Brazilians to the brand is due to the high prices of smartphones. The cheapest model sold on Apple's website is the 64 GB iPhone SE for R$ 4,199.
