What would your reaction be if you knew that a fireball was shooting lightning and radiation in your direction? Well, that's exactly what's going on with the Sun toward Earth. According to scientists, as it gets closer to the end of its eleven-year cycle, a sunspot three times larger than Earth is growing rapidly. With this, there are new reports of solar storms on the surface of the star.

What are sunspots?

Basically, they are spots as big as planets, but slightly less luminous than the rest of the sun, since they are less hot than the areas they surround. It is through them that the famous solar flares (beams of electromagnetic radiation that can cause faults in the Earth's electrical grid). This is precisely what scares researchers, as they can directly interfere with the planet's geolocation services.

According to Alex Young, a scientist physicist at NASA, one of the eight stains facing the Earth, more specifically the so-called AR3038, more than doubled in size last Monday (20), becoming several times larger than the diameter of the Earth. According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Prediction Center, there were a 25-30% chance of Class M eruptions, and a 5-10% chance of Class X eruptions by this Friday (24).

Fortunately, despite being the second strongest form of eruption, the M class, solar flares are relatively weak and a little more discreet, generating small blackouts in the radio waves. Even in early June, it was possible to notice that a similar solar flare resulted in radio outages in some Asian countries. On the other hand, through them, the probability that more striking aurora borealis will appear is very high.

In addition, it is possible to observe other relatively smaller spots, namely: 3030, 3031, 3032, 3033, 3034, 3035 and 3037.
