Unprecedented! Biblical Grape Seeds Found After 1,100 Years

grape seeds 1,100 years old are discovered in excavations in the Negev desert in Israel. DNA analysis revealed that one of the samples matches a variety mentioned in the Bible during Jacob's blessing of his son Judah.

The research, conducted by the paleogenetic laboratory at the Steinhardt Museum of Natural History in Tel Aviv University and Haifa University, released the results in a statement on the 4th of May.

At the archaeological site of Avdat, a ruined Nabataean city in the desert, 16 grape seeds were found on the floor of a room. To analyze the samples, the scientists used the infrared spectroscopy technique to detect the presence of organic matter.

Next, the researchers proceeded to extract the DNA from the seeds, focusing on approximately 10,000 genomic sites where variety-specific traits are frequently encountered. The results obtained were compared with databases of modern vines from different regions around the world.

Grape Seeds Found in Israel Prove Biblical Sayings

Of the 11 samples analyzed in the research, the quality of the genetic material was insufficient to obtain significant conclusions. However, in three other samples, local grape varieties were identified.

The most interesting point was the discovery of two samples, both dated to approximately 900 BC. C., which corresponded to local varieties still present today.

One of the varieties identified was strikingly similar to the Syriki variety, which is currently used to produce high-quality red wines in Lebanon and Greece.

It is possible that the name of this plant, which indicates its geographical origin, is derived from Nahal Sorek, an important stream located in the Judean hills. This discovery points to the long history and continuity of winemaking practices in the region.

This archaeological discovery provides a possible connection between the grape varieties found and the biblical references. The description of the grape mentioned in Genesis 49:11 and Numbers 13:23 coincides with the existence of these local grape varieties found in the Negev Desert.

That, of course, is archeology proving its historical importance.

The research strengthens the hypothesis that the discovered grape varieties could be the same ones mentioned in the Bible, giving an interesting historical context to the passages. Still, it's important to point out that more research and studies are needed to definitively confirm this connection, although there are answers for now.
