A “future classroom” it may be closer than you think. With the development of augmented reality technology and the impact of the pandemic on education, which led everyone to adopt remote learning, universities and schools in Brazil and around the world began to explore the resource of Metaverse.

Although it is not new, Metaverso returned to the radar after Mark Zuckenberg, the owner of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, changed the name of the holding companies to Goal and announce that this would be her next bet. This mixture of parallel reality with The Sims characters now arrives for Brazilian education.

One of the first classrooms in this format was launched last week by the FIA Business School. The teacher uses virtual reality glasses to teach the students, while students who do not yet have the device will be able to connect to the online space via video call.

“For them it is an incredible experience. We are not talking about a 'stoned' world, but a different universe. The student can participate at home, lying in bed, when he is transported to the classroom. There, he walks, talks, claps his hands and interacts with his colleagues, while I write on the blackboard, give a presentation and doubt", explains the director of Fia's Labdata nucleus, Alessandra Montini, responsible for creating the space.

She says that she did a ten-day immersion with some colleagues with the aim of creating the virtual classroom. Just getting the hang of the remote took about four hours.

Although there are many attractions, Alessandra points out that this is one of the great challenges for Metaverso teachers. “It's wonderful for the student, because he sits and watches. For the teacher, he has to know the subject by heart, follow the expressions of the avatars to know if the student is understanding or not, control the technological resources available and so on. Teaching a class in the metaverse is like running a marathon. You have to stop for about 15 minutes and rest afterwards”, she says.

NFT

Several companies around the world are investing in training and preparatory courses that will be taught exclusively for virtual reality. Among the main advantages, the possibility of receiving students and employees from all over the world stands out.

USP also entered this world and ended up becoming the first Brazilian public university to enter the Metaverse, through an international cooperation agreement with Radio Caca (RACA), which provided an NFT (non-fungible token) to institution.
